Brands can't buy a place in our rankings, a better score, or a change to a write-up. We don't accept payment, free products or loaned gear in exchange for coverage. We may earn a commission when you buy through some links (see the affiliate disclosure), and that commission works the same way whichever product you choose, so it has no reason to change which one we rank first.
We rank for the buyer. The right decoy for a flooded timber hole is not the right decoy for open big water, and a page says so even when that means recommending fewer products. When you don't need new gear, we say that too.
Where our facts come from
Every factual claim on the site has a source, and the sources are listed at the bottom of each page. In order of preference:
- The maker's own product pages, spec sheets, manuals and warranty terms for product facts.
- A named retailer's listing, labeled as a retailer source, when the maker doesn't publish a figure.
- Official agencies for rules: the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations for federal rules, state wildlife agencies for state rules.
- Conservation, university and veterinary sources for migration, habitat and dog-health topics. Migration timing is always written as what a source reports as typical, never as a promise.
If we can't source a fact, we leave it out or say it isn't published. We don't fill gaps from memory. The scoring rubrics and weights are on how we score.
Claims we refuse to make
Most gear sites say they tested everything. We didn't test these, and we say so. The things you will never read on this site:
- "We tested", "in our testing", days-in-the-marsh counts, or wear impressions we don't have.
- Invented prices, discounts, "deal" or "budget" claims. When we can't verify a current price, the button says "Check price on Amazon".
- Star ratings, review counts or customer quotes presented as our own findings, and no testimonials of any kind.
- Credentials, titles or years of experience nobody here holds.
- A call's sound or a decoy's realism described as our observation. Those are the maker's claims, and we label them that way.
- Season dates, bag limits or state rules restated from memory.
That's the trade we make. In return, every score comes with its weights, every spec with its source, and every pick with pros, cons and a "skip it if" line.
Regulations and safety
Waterfowl rules come from the federal framework and then from each state, and they change every year. Pages that touch on seasons, electronic calls, the light goose conservation order or legal methods link the governing text and tell you to confirm with your state wildlife agency. Where the exact wording matters, we quote it. Safety topics (cold water, ice, blind heaters, a dog's cold exposure) are cited to manufacturer manuals or official and veterinary sources, or left out.
Firearms and ammunition are outside what this site covers. They can't be sold through our retail partner, and choosing them is a decision for your own research and local laws.
How pages are written
We use AI tools to help research, draft and organize pages. Nothing is published as-is: every product fact is checked against the product registry we build from the maker's own pages, every regulation or research claim is checked against the source it cites, and every page is checked against the rules on this page before it goes live. The build that publishes the site also refuses to ship a page with an unsourced spec, a price figure, a testing claim, or a link to a page that doesn't exist. The byline on each page belongs to the person responsible for it.
How picks change
Waterfowl gear changes model years often, and a decoy or wader that ranked well can be replaced or discontinued. We re-check each season kit and its roundups before that season phase opens, review every roundup quarterly, and review guides yearly or when a cited source changes. A page's "Updated" date only moves when its content actually changes, and each real change adds a one-line note to the page's "What changed" log.
Corrections
If you think something on a page is wrong, email mike@blackironathletics.com or use the contact form with the topic "Correction". Tell us the page and the fact. We check it against the source, fix it within seven days if it's wrong, and record the fix in that page's "What changed" log with the date.
