What makes a breed a duck dog

None of the breeds below were bred as generalists. Each has a documented history built around water work: a coat that sheds cold water, a drive to retrieve that AKC breed pages describe as bred-in rather than trained in, and in one case, an entire hunting technique (tolling) built around the dog itself.

The breeds

• Labrador Retriever. Descended from Newfoundland's St. John's Dog, which fishermen used to haul nets and dive for cod that slipped off the hook. An 1847 observer called the breed "remarkable for their diving powers," and the Earl of Malmesbury noted a coat that "turns the water off like oil" with a "tail like an otter," per AKC's Labrador Retriever history. It remains, per AKC, "America's most popular dog breed."
• Chesapeake Bay Retriever. AKC calls it "an American original," developed in the Mid-Atlantic specifically for duck hunting and "famous for his waterproof coat." AKC's own shorthand for the breed is the "peerless duck dog," with a temperament it describes as "loyal, upbeat, affectionate, and tireless" ( AKC: Chesapeake Bay Retriever).
• Golden Retriever. A Scottish gundog breed AKC describes as "serious workers at hunting and field work" with an "exuberant" drive that carries into the field (AKC: Golden Retriever).
• Boykin Spaniel. South Carolina's state dog, once "South Carolina's best-kept secret" before wider recognition. AKC lists it as a "flushing and retrieving dog" and a "tenacious bird dog," medium-sized and, per AKC, "avid, eager, merry, and trainable" in the field while "mellow" at home (AKC: Boykin Spaniel).
• Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. The smallest AKC retriever, developed in Yarmouth County to toll, or lure, ducks within gun range: the dog plays along the shore with a ball or bumper until curious ducks swim into range, at which point "the hunter stands, takes aim." The Toller then marks and retrieves the fallen bird (AKC: Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever history).
• American Water Spaniel. AKC lists this breed as native to "the lake country of the upper Midwest" (Wisconsin), calling it "an upbeat, outdoorsy athlete who loves to hunt and swim" (AKC: American Water Spaniel).
