Waders vs Bibs for Duck Hunting

Water depth decides it

This isn't really a preference question. A chest wader like Banded's Phantom X covers you to the chest for timber holes, flooded fields and boat launches where you can't predict the bottom. Banded's RZ-X 1.5 hip wader only covers to the hip, which is the whole point for shallow marsh edges and quick sets where you never go past your thigh; going any deeper puts water over the top. Drake's LST Hardline Insulated Bib is not a wader at all: it's a waterproof shell worn over your own boots, dry only above the boot top, so it belongs in dry-field goose spreads and stubble blinds, not in water of any depth.

Mobility and warmth

A bib is the easiest of the three to walk and sit in, since it's built like heavy field pants rather than a sealed suit; Drake's Hardline Bib adds lower-leg zips specifically so it goes on and off over boots without removing them. Hip waders come next: the RZ-X 1.5's snap-button top is faster on and off than a full chest wader, with insulated legs and a 1200-gram Thinsulate boot for warmth without the bulk of a chest-high suit. A chest wader like the Phantom X is the most restrictive of the three to hike in, but it's the only one of the three built to keep you dry above the waist.
