Layout blinds

A layout blind puts one hunter flat on their back at ground level, low enough that a 12-18-inch profile is the whole concealment plan before you add cover. A-frame and panel blinds

A-frame and panel blinds stand a group up inside a covered frame instead of laying each hunter flat. Both types here are sized for 3-4 hunters; the difference is mostly in how they pack down. A framed A-frame like the ALPS Alpha is built around real shooting doors and dog doors, at real weight (39 lbs). A panel blind like the TideWe folds to a fraction of that (37 x 7.5 x 7.5 inches) for hunters who set up in more than one spot a season. Boat blinds

A boat blind mounts to your boat rather than standing free in a field. The Beavertail 1600 Series fits 15-16-foot jon boats with a 60-72-inch beam, attaches with a telescoping frame and no drilling, and Beavertail says it converts to a field blind by swapping the mounting arms for ground stakes. Avery also sells a Quick-Set Boat Blind Kit for 14-19-foot boats; Banded's own store showed every size of that kit unavailable as of September 19, 2026, though it was not marked discontinued, so check current availability before counting on it.

Pit blinds

A pit blind is dug into the ground rather than carried or mounted, for a fixed spot you hunt all season. Ducks Unlimited's interview with one Nebraska builder describes a heavy steel frame sunk with a bulldozer, insulated garage-door panels for walls and a plywood floor, with covering the shooting holes as the key concealment step, since open holes spook birds more than almost anything else. No pit blind product is sold as a complete kit on Amazon the way a layout or A-frame blind is; what you can buy are the mats, chairs and heaters that go with one. Some public land requires a permit for a fixed or stationary blind; Virginia, for example, licenses stationary waterfowl blinds and requires the licensee to remove them once a license lapses. Matching a blind to the season

The type that fits a hunt often changes as the season moves. Early teal season means warm weather, thin vegetation and short sits, where a light layout blind or no blind at all over natural cover is often enough; see early-season teal gear. By the regular season, field goose hunters lean on A-frame and panel blinds for group setups over cut grain, and layout blinds stay the standard for smaller field spreads. Late season adds cold and, often, snow: concealment gets harder as cover thins or turns white, and a fixed pit or box blind starts to make sense for hunters with the same spot to return to all winter. Who should skip a blind entirely

Some hunts don't need any of the above.
