What a "flotation" claim actually means

Every buoyancy statement on these product pages is the maker's own published claim, and none of the four vests compared here publishes a U.S. Coast Guard rating. ALPS describes its Topflight's two pads as providing "additional buoyancy." Banded uses nearly identical language for its 5mm Dog Parka. Ruffwear goes further and calls the Float Coat a "PFD" built from layered EVA and PE foam for "optimal buoyancy without restricting mobility," but that is still Ruffwear's own description, not a certification. Treat every flotation claim on this page the same way: useful information from the people who built the product, not a safety rating.

Neoprene-first vests

Neoprene is a wetsuit material, and its main job on a dog vest is to slow heat loss in cold water, the same way it does on a hunter. Drake's Neoprene Dog Vest is the clearest example here: 5mm neoprene with a reinforced chest panel and no flotation claim at all. ALPS's Topflight uses the same 5mm thickness but adds two flotation pads on top of it, so it does both jobs at once. Thicker neoprene generally means more warmth, but published thickness alone doesn't tell you how a vest floats; that comes down to whatever foam or padding, if any, the maker adds separately.

The flotation-first option: Ruffwear Float Coat

The Ruffwear Float Coat is a different kind of product than the rest of this page: an 800D polyester shell over layered EVA and PE foam, with no neoprene and no stated insulation. Ruffwear sells six sizes spanning 13- to 42-inch chest girths, wider than any neoprene vest here, plus a reinforced lift handle and reflective trim for visibility. It comes in bright solid colors, not camouflage, which is the tradeoff for treating buoyancy as the only job.

The middle ground: MOmarsh's separate flotation panel

The MOmarsh VersaVest sits between the two approaches. The base vest is 5mm rubberized neoprene with no flotation built in, sized as one adjustable garment for dogs from 35 to over 100 lbs. MOmarsh sells a separate VersaVest Flotation Replacement Panel that it says "increases the amount of buoyancy," which lets you add flotation later without buying a second vest, but it also means the base vest by itself makes no buoyancy claim.

Who should skip both
