Why breathable, and when not to

Neoprene keeps you warm by trapping heat against you. Breathable waders do the opposite: the shell keeps water out while letting water vapor — your sweat — move through it, and the warmth comes from a liner or from what you wear underneath. That single difference decides which one is right for you, and it has almost nothing to do with how cold it is.

If you walk in, breathable wins. A mile through a marsh in neoprene leaves you wet from the inside, and wet is cold once you stop moving. A breathable shell moves that sweat out, so you arrive dry and stay warm sitting still. That is the whole case, and it is why every serious walk-in hunter ends up in breathables eventually.

If you drive to a blind and stand still in cold water, neoprene is warmer for the money. Five millimetres of neoprene insulates on its own, costs a fraction of a technical breathable shell, and has no membrane to fail. How to read a breathable wader spec

Layer count is the headline, and more layers is generally more durable rather than more breathable. The waders here publish three, four and five-layer constructions: Banded's Black Label Elite is a five-layer GO fabric, the Phantom X is a three-layer, Gator publishes a four-layer polyester exterior over a waterproof membrane, and Drake publishes four and five-layer Guardian Elite fabrics on the HND with a three-layer on the Vanguard and Hardline. Seams are where breathable waders actually fail. A membrane is only as waterproof as the holes you put through it, which is why the seam language matters more than the fabric language.
