What actually goes wrong

Waders are sold by boot size with a body attached, and the body is cut for an average frame. If you are under about five foot eight, or if your legs are short relative to your torso, the wader you buy for your feet comes with a crotch that sits low, legs that bunch at the ankle and a chest panel that reaches your collarbone. That is not a cosmetic problem: bunched fabric at the knee is where waders wear through, a low crotch shortens your stride in mud, and a wader you can trip on in thigh-deep water is a safety issue.

There are three separate measurements to fix, and most makers publish only one. Boot size, which every maker publishes; body girth, which the stout and king cuts address; and torso or inseam length, which almost nobody publishes as a number. How to buy for a short frame

Buy a published short or slim cut if one exists in your size. That is the Banded Black Label Elite in Short, or the Phantom X in Slim. Everything else is a compromise, and the compromise gets worse the more technical the fabric is.

Neoprene forgives extra length; breathable fabric does not. Neoprene stretches and compresses, so a little extra body length in a 3.5 or 4.5mm wader mostly disappears once the suspenders are set. Breathable shells have no give: extra length stays as folds at the knee and behind the ankle, which is exactly where abrasion kills them. Check where the boot sizes start, not just where they end. Banded publishes boots from 5 on the Phantom X, HISEA from 6 on the FrostEdge, Frogg Toggs from 7 and LaCrosse from 7. Drake, Gator and Avery all start at 8. Remember a wader boot is worn over a heavy sock, so sizing up one is normal — which means a size 7 foot in a size 8 boot is fine, and a size 6 foot in a size 8 boot is a blister.

Set the suspenders and the belt properly before you judge the fit. Half the “too long” complaints are a suspender adjustment: pulling the body up and cinching a wading belt at the waist takes real length out of the leg and stops the crotch riding low. Consider a women's cut if the numbers line up. Women's waders are cut shorter in the torso and narrower in the shoulder for the same boot size, which is exactly the geometry a short male frame often needs.
