How to choose a goose call

Every call here is a short reed built for Canada geese, so the reed system and the maker's tuning and warranty support separate them more than barrel shape does. Sean Mann's Eastern Shoreman is explicit that it is not a flute-style call, and none of the picks below are marketed as flutes.

Barrel material ranges from RNT's acrylic to Buck Gardner's and Zink's polycarbonate to Sean Mann's molded ABS. Our acrylic vs wood comparison and single reed vs double reed comparison are written around duck calls, but the same material and reed tradeoffs apply if you're weighing an acrylic goose call against a polycarbonate one.

Tuning and warranty support is uneven here, and it matters over a season. RNT and Buck Gardner both publish a lifetime warranty and free factory tuning, and Buck Gardner sells a plug-and-play guts kit for the Grey Ghost. Sean Mann sells replacement reeds without a published warranty length. Tim Grounds offers one year and mail-in custom tuning for a fee. Zink and Primos publish shorter or unstated warranty terms and no reed kits for the calls below.

Once you have a call, our guide to blowing a goose call covers the clucks, moans and honks that make a short reed sound like a Canada goose instead of a kazoo.

Reed systems, in the maker's own words

Every maker here names its own reed system, and the name tells you what you're actually tuning.

CallReed design (maker's words)Self-serviceable?
RNT G3Reed set on a toneboard and wedge block inside a reed assembly holderReed and cork set sold; free factory tuning (advanced callers only, per RNT)
Buck Gardner Grey Ghost PolyQuick-Tune guts: reed, trough and wedgeTune-up kit sold; free factory tuning for life
Sean Mann Express Shorty / Eastern ShoremanEasy-Tune Reed System; no reed-shavingField-strips and retunes without tools; reed 3-packs sold
Tim Grounds Super ThangShort reedReed 3-pack sold; mail-in custom tuning for a fee
Zink PC-1 / Primos Honky TonkStraight-bore or anti-stick reed systemNot published (Zink) or not published (Primos)

RNT is worth a specific callout: it sells the parts to retune its own G3, but the maker's own FAQ recommends that only advanced callers actually take the call apart, and offers free factory tuning as the default instead.

What each maker says about sound

As with every call on this site, volume and range are the maker's own description, not an independent measurement, and count for 15% of the score.

CallSound, in the maker's words
RNT G3"Extremely responsive, easy to use"; "the most realistic goosey sounds ... to date"
Buck Gardner Grey Ghost Poly"Lightning-fast double-clucks and a higher pitch for loud, ringing honks"
Sean Mann Express Shorty / Eastern Shoreman"Can be very loud or super quiet," with "throaty" lows and "snappy" highs
Tim Grounds Super Thang"The nasty low end of the Real Thang and the full power of the Super Mag"
Zink PC-1 Power Clucker"Powerful clucks and double clucks, as well as a full range of other goose vocalizations"
Primos Honky Tonk"Reproduces all of the sounds of Canada geese" with "minimal backpressure"

How we scored these

Each call is scored on the same five weighted metrics as every call on this site: reed system and ease of learning (30%), material and build (20%), tunability and serviceability (20%), sound range as described in the maker's own materials, labeled as the maker's claim (15%), and warranty terms (15%). The full rubric is published on how we score. These scores come from manufacturer product pages, manuals and warranty policies, not from blowing these calls ourselves.

Picking by situation

First goose call, or teaching someone to run one: the Express Shorty and the PC-1 are the two calls here their makers pitch directly at new callers, and Zink's own FAQ recommends the PC-1 for beginners.

Late-season, call-shy honkers: RNT markets the G3 as covering everything through late-season birds, and the Grey Ghost's fast double-clucks suit call-shy geese that need short, sharp sounds rather than long moans.

You already run a short reed well: the Super Thang is built for a caller who wants more range out of a call, not an easier one to start on.

Heavily hunted fields, call-shy geese: the Eastern Shoreman's longer, non-flute design gives you a different tone from the short, snappy calls most of the field runs, which is worth having in reserve on public land.

Who should skip all of these

Calling ducks instead of geese: see best duck calls for single reed and double reed picks. Hunting the spring light-goose conservation order and considering an electronic caller: read electronic caller laws before you buy one; federal rules bar recorded or amplified calls outside that narrow window.

A goose call is one piece of a field spread. See our best goose decoys picks and the full goose hunting gear list for the rest of what a Canada goose hunt calls for.

Who should skip buying a new call: if your current short reed already gets geese to commit, a higher score here isn't a reason to swap it out. These scores compare published specs and maker support, not whether the call in your hand still works on your birds.

How we picked

Scored on paper, and we say so

Most gear sites say they tested everything. We didn't test these, and we say so. Every pick is scored from the maker's published specs, manuals and warranty terms on a rubric we publish, and the sources are listed at the bottom of the page.

Scores are editorial judgments from that published information, not field or lab results. Nobody pays for placement, and an unpublished spec is never guessed upward. See every rubric and weight.

FAQ

Questions hunters ask

What's the best goose call for a beginner?
The Sean Mann Express Shorty and the Zink PC-1 Power Clucker are the two calls here their makers pitch directly at new callers; Zink's own FAQ names the PC-1 for beginners. See how to blow a goose call once you've picked one.
What's the best short reed goose call?
Every call on this page is a short reed. The RNT G3 scores highest overall on our rubric, and the Tim Grounds Super Thang is built for callers who already run a short reed and want more range.
Do goose calls need to be tuned?
Reed systems can go flat or stop responding. RNT and Buck Gardner publish free factory tuning for the life of the call; the rest of the calls above vary in warranty length and don't all publish a tuning service. See how we score for the published weighting.
What material are goose calls made from?
It varies by maker: RNT uses acrylic, Buck Gardner and Zink use polycarbonate, and Sean Mann molds its Express line from ABS. Material affects tone and wet-weather consistency more than how easy the call is to learn.
Can I use a duck call for goose hunting?
Not effectively. A duck call's reed and barrel are built for a duck's voice. See best duck calls for the duck side of this hub.

We don't field-test decoys, calls, waders or blinds, and we don't pretend to.
