What field hunting asks of a goose decoy

Almost every decoy on this page is a field decoy, and that is not an accident: Canada geese are shot over dry ground far more often than over water, and a field spread asks three things a water spread does not. It has to stand up on its own in stubble, corn or frozen dirt; it has to look right from directly above, because field birds circle and commit from overhead rather than sliding in low; and it has to survive being handled hundreds of times a season, because a field spread is set and picked up every hunt.

Standing up is a base problem, not a body problem. Full bodies mount on stakes or on motion bases, and which one you want depends entirely on the ground you hunt. Stakes are cheaper and hold better in soft dirt; motion bases stand on frozen or hard ground where a stake will not go, and they move in a light breeze. Posture mix is what makes a field spread read as feeding geese. A real feeding flock is mostly heads-down feeders with a handful of uprights and sentries watching. Picking by ground and posture mix
