How to choose goose decoys
This roundup covers full-body and shell Canada goose decoys built to sit or stand in a field. If silhouettes are on your list too, that's a separate decision with its own tradeoffs; see silhouette vs full-body goose decoys.
Posture mix decides how the spread reads from the air. A spread that's all feeders looks unnaturally calm to geese that expect to see a sentry watching for danger. Higdon's TruFeeder pack is feeders only by design, which is fine as an add-on to a mixed spread but not a full spread on its own; Avian-X's Sentry-Walker pack and Dakota's Signature uprights both mix walking, relaxed and sentry postures in one box. For how many total decoys a given field or water spread actually needs, see how many goose decoys you need.
One-piece bodies versus separate heads is a durability tradeoff. Dakota's and Final Approach's full bodies are molded in one piece, so there's no head to snap off in transport. GHG's Hunter Series and Higdon's half-shells use separate, removable heads, which lets you vary posture from the same body but adds a failure point; GHG addresses this with threaded PermaLoc connections instead of a snap fit.
Warranty support varies more than the decoys themselves. Final Approach is the only maker here that publishes a full year against manufacturing defects. Dakota states obvious workmanship defects are replaced or refunded within the first 30 days; Higdon's pages point only to a 30-day return policy; GHG and Avian-X publish no decoy warranty term at all. See Avian-X vs Dakota decoys for how that gap plays out pack for pack between those two brands specifically.
Once you know what you're buying, how you set it matters just as much. Our goose decoy spread guide covers field patterns, landing-hole sizing and where to add silhouettes for bulk.
How we scored these
Each decoy is scored on five published metrics: realism features (25%), durability and construction (25%), rigging and motion options (15%), packability and weight per unit (20%), and warranty and parts support (15%). The full weighting is published on how we score. These scores come from manufacturer spec sheets and warranty pages, not from running these decoys in a field ourselves.
Picking by ground and posture mix
Frozen or hard ground: Dakota's Signature uprights stand on motion bases rather than stakes, which matters once the ground won't take a spike. GHG's Hunter Series ships with its own RealMotion III stakes if you'd rather stake than base-mount.
Walking a spread in by hand: Higdon's half-shells stack, and at 21 to 24 oz each they're lighter to carry than a full one-piece body. Full bodies on bases, like Dakota's and Avian-X's, are the bulkiest option here to haul on foot.
Feeder-heavy spreads: Higdon's APEX TruFeeder Pack is built specifically to fill that role; add Avian-X's Sentry-Walker Pack or Dakota's Signature uprights for the heads-up geese a realistic spread needs.
Who should skip all of these
Spring snow goose hunts: none of these are snow or blue goose decoys; see spring snow goose gear for that spread. Hunting ducks instead of geese: see best duck decoys.

Full-body geese take real trailer and truck space. If you hunt public land or walk in, weigh a shell or silhouette-heavy spread instead; see silhouette vs full-body goose decoys before you commit to a dozen full bodies. For everything else on the checklist, see the goose hunting gear list and, for big field spreads on open ground, our Central Flyway kit.
How we picked
Scored on paper, and we say so
Most gear sites say they tested everything. We didn't test these, and we say so. Every pick is scored from the maker's published specs, manuals and warranty terms on a rubric we publish, and the sources are listed at the bottom of the page.
Scores are editorial judgments from that published information, not field or lab results. Nobody pays for placement, and an unpublished spec is never guessed upward. See every rubric and weight.

We don't field-test decoys, calls, waders or blinds, and we don't pretend to. Specs, materials and warranty terms come from the maker's own pages and manuals (or a named retailer's listing where the maker doesn't publish them). Regulations are linked to the agency that writes them. Prices are set by Amazon and change often, so we don't print them. Where a figure isn't published, we say so. Read the full method.
