How Many Duck Decoys Do You Need

These ranges come from hunters Ducks Unlimited interviewed about their own spreads, not a fixed formula. Treat them as a starting point, not a rule.

Season phase matters as much as water size. One hunter Ducks Unlimited profiled runs an 18-decoy early-season spread (seven to eight black ducks, three pintail drakes and the rest mallards), then expands to 36 decoys late in the season (24 black ducks, three pintails and nine mallards) as birds get warier and darker decoys read better at distance. What to weigh besides the number

Composition beats raw count. A dozen decoys in three or four postures, mixed species and realistic paint reads better to working ducks than three dozen identical decoys in one posture. See best duck decoys for packs that mix postures out of the box.

What you can actually carry sets a hard ceiling. A standard backpack tops out around 18 decoys per the guidance above; a soft, collapsible pack like Dakota's EVA floaters helps close that gap without adding a second trip.
