How to choose a motion decoy

Before anything else on this page: check whether powered motion decoys are legal where and when you plan to hunt. Rules vary by state, and even within a state by wildlife management area versus national wildlife refuge; see the regulation note below and Arkansas's own example, where spinning-wing decoys are currently allowed on state-managed wildlife management areas but still banned on the state's national wildlife refuges.

What actually moves, and how you turn it on or off, separates these more than brand. Water motion units like the Pulsator PRO and Battleship Swimmer PRO spray, rock or swim in place and run on a built-in timer; spinning-wing decoys like the Lucky HD and MOJO Mini Mallard spin magnetic or pole-mounted wings, often with an optional remote sold separately; the Clone is a flapper built for a field goose spread; and jerk rigs move decoys by hand-pulled line with no battery at all.

Published runtime and water depth decide whether a unit fits your spot. Higdon publishes exact runtimes and minimum water depth for its water-motion decoys (6 inches for the Pulsator PRO, 12 inches for the Battleship Swimmer PRO); MOJO publishes no runtime for the Mini Mallard, and Higdon publishes none for the Clone, which also needs a 12-volt battery it doesn't include.

Jerk rigs are the battery-free option. Both jerk rigs here move multiple decoys by hand from a line run back to the blind, which sidesteps both the battery question and most state restrictions on powered decoys, though you should still confirm that with your own state agency.

Each motion decoy is scored on five published metrics: motion type and adjustability (30%), power and published runtime (20%), durability and weather resistance (20%), setup and portability (15%), and warranty (15%). These are editorial reads of manufacturer spec sheets, not results from running these decoys in the field ourselves.

Picking by water and situation

Shallow marsh with little current: the Pulsator PRO is built for water as shallow as 6 inches, which rules out several bigger swimmers.

Open water pockets: the Battleship Swimmer PRO and the Lucky HD spinning-wing decoy both need more room to work, and both publish IPX7 or long battery specs suited to a full morning.

Field goose spreads: the Clone is the only flapper here, but plan to carry in its own 12-volt battery since Higdon doesn't include one.
