Decoys & Spreads Comparison

Higdon vs GHG Decoys, Compared on the Spec Sheet

Two value-tier giants read side by side on what they actually print: Higdon publishes numbers and sells replacement parts, GHG publishes poses and includes hardware in the box.

What each brand publishes

These two brands sit on the same shelf at the same end of the price band, which is exactly why the comparison is hard: the bodies are close enough that the decision comes down to what each company is willing to print. Read the spec sheets side by side and a consistent split appears, and it holds across ducks and geese.

Higdon publishes measurements. Per-decoy length, per-decoy weight, posture breakdown by count, keel type and whether a pack is foam-filled are on the product page for pack after pack. That matters more than it sounds: weight is the spec that decides what you can carry, and it is the one most decoy makers skip. Higdon also publishes postures, dimensions and per-decoy weights for goose decoys, including the Full-Size Half-Shell Canada at 21 inches breast to tail, 11.25 inches wide and 21.15 to 24.19 ounces per shell.

GHG publishes configuration. Pose counts, pack counts, keel geometry and what is in the box are the numbers Banded prints for the GHG line, and on the XD mallards it does publish per-pose dimensions and weights. What it does not publish, anywhere in our registry, is a decoy warranty term. GHG's Pro-Grade Lesser Canada Harvester Pack arrives with twelve decoys and twelve RealMotion II stakes, which is hardware you would otherwise buy separately, and no stated coverage if a body fails.

Higdon and GHG specs exactly as each maker publishes them; each value links to its own source.

On water: Standard Mallard vs Pro-Grade XD

On the water the two packs are built for different problems. Higdon's Standard Mallard is the smaller, lighter decoy: 12.625 to 13.875 inches long, 12.96 to 14.27 ounces each, available foam-filled, with a forward-weighted keel and a front clip so the line can be short-strung for shallow water. It is a carry-in decoy and a flooded-timber decoy, and the fill is the reason it survives being hunted over rather than looked at.

GHG's Pro-Grade XD Series Mallard Harvester is the bigger, more varied decoy: 16.53 to 18.11 inches by pose, 1.06 to 1.20 pounds each, six separate postures in one box, on a 60/40 DuraKeel that puts most of the mass forward so the body rides nose-into-wind. If your spread looks static and you want one pack that fixes it, this is the pack; if you walk a mile in, the extra inches and ounces per decoy add up fast.

Neither pack is flocked. Neither publishes a fill claim in GHG's case or a flocking claim in Higdon's, and both bodies are honest value-tier plastic doing a value-tier job. For the flocked end of the shelf see most realistic duck decoys, and for how these two rank against the whole floating field see best duck decoys.

In the field: Half Shell vs Pro-Grade Lesser

In the field the split gets sharper, because the two packs are not even the same kind of decoy. Higdon sells you six half shells with removable flocked heads: 21 inches breast to tail, 11.25 inches wide, four postures (Tru sentry, rester, two Tru walkers, two feeders), 21.15 to 24.19 ounces per shell, and stackable bodies. Removable heads are the practical half of that: they stack flatter and you can swap one when it breaks, and Higdon publishes the weight of every shell so you can plan a load.

GHG sells you twelve one-piece lessers with fixed flocked heads and the stakes included — eight feeders, three active and one sentry, sized as a true lesser Canada replica rather than a shrunken honker. One-piece means nothing to assemble in the dark and nothing to lose in the field, which is a real advantage; it also means the postures are fixed and the bodies do not nest as tightly.

Both are flocked on the head, which is the right place to spend flocking money on a field decoy sitting in full sun. The honest way to choose is by how you move a spread: if you haul decoys in a trailer and want count, GHG's twelve-with-stakes wins on arithmetic. If you carry decoys in a sled or a bag and want them to stack, Higdon's half shells win. Both show up in best cheap goose decoys, and the shell-versus-full-body question is covered in silhouettes vs full-body goose decoys.

Parts, warranty and broken necks

Decoys fail at the neck. A head snaps off, a swivel strips, or a keel screw pulls through, and the body itself is usually still fine — which makes replacement parts more useful than a warranty for most hunters. Higdon sells Battleship Mallard replacement heads as their own listed product, publishes a 30-day return policy on its site with no longer term stated, and sells its goose shells with removable heads so a broken head is a swap rather than a dead decoy.

GHG, in our registry, publishes no decoy warranty term and no replacement-part listing. That is not an accusation; plenty of decoy makers publish nothing, and Banded sells the GHG line with the pack contents as the whole promise. It is simply a column you should fill in before you choose, because a spread is a multi-season purchase and a broken head in year two is a certainty, not a risk.

If published support is the deciding factor for you, read Avian-X vs Dakota Decoys, which is the comparison on this site where a real warranty term and a parts program both exist, and Avian-X vs GHG decoys for GHG against the other premium line.

Which to buy

Buy Higdon for a first spread, for any hunt you walk into, and for goose decoys you have to stack: the published weights let you plan a load, the foam fill survives being hunted over, and removable heads plus listed replacement parts mean a damaged decoy is a repair rather than a loss. Our best duck decoys for the money ranking has three Higdon packs in it for exactly these reasons.

Buy GHG when configuration is the problem. Six postures in one duck pack is the fastest way to make a spread stop looking arranged, and twelve lessers with twelve stakes in one box is the cheapest honest way to put a dozen flocked-head geese in a field. Accept that there is no published warranty term and buy accordingly.

The one answer that is wrong is buying all of one brand. Spreads look best when posture, size and silhouette vary, and these two lines differ enough in body size that mixing them is a feature. Set the result with how to build a duck decoy spread or how to build a goose decoy spread.

FAQ

Questions hunters ask

Is Higdon or GHG better for duck decoys?
They are close, and the split is about what each company publishes. Higdon prints per-decoy weights and lengths, sells its packs in a foam-filled style and lists replacement heads as separate products. GHG prints posture counts and pack contents, and the Pro-Grade XD puts six distinct poses in a six-pack. If you walk your decoys in, Higdon's smaller, lighter, filled bodies are the safer buy; if your spread looks static, GHG's pose variety is the fix.
Do GHG decoys have a warranty?
None of the GHG decoys in our registry publish a warranty term on their product pages. Banded sells the line on pack contents and configuration instead. Higdon publishes a 30-day return policy sitewide, sells replacement heads for its Battleship floaters as a separate item, and builds its goose shells with removable heads.
Are GHG and Avery the same company?
GHG (Greenhead Gear) and Avery are both sold under Banded, and the GHG product pages live on banded.com, which is why our sources for GHG specs point there. Our Avery A-frame blinds page covers the Avery side of the same parent brand.
Can you mix Higdon and GHG decoys in one spread?
Yes, and it is a good idea. The two lines differ in body size — Higdon's Standard Mallard is under 14 inches, GHG's Pro-Grade XD runs 16.53 to 18.11 inches — and that variation reads as a mixed raft of real birds rather than a boxed set. Mixing brands is the cheapest way to add visual variety to a spread you already own.
Which brand is cheaper?
Both sit at the value end of the decoy shelf and street prices move constantly, so the only honest answer is the live price on each buy button above. What does not move is the spec sheet: Higdon gives you published weights and replaceable heads, GHG gives you pose counts and included stakes.
