Decoys & Spreads Comparison
Silhouette Goose Decoys vs Full-Body: Which to Run
Silhouettes pack flat and stack cheap; full bodies and shells show from every angle. Here's what the spec sheets say about each.

Weight and packability
Silhouettes win this comparison outright. Dakota's X-Treme Canada Silhouettes stack a dozen at a time and publish no per-decoy weight at all because a flat 5.5mm panel barely registers one; GHG's Pro-Grade silhouettes are built the same way, sold in stacks of 12. Final Approach's full bodies and Higdon's half-shells both take real volume: the LIVE Fully Flocked pack publishes no dimensions but is a complete one-piece body per decoy, while Higdon's half-shells at least stack and publish a per-decoy weight of 21 to 24 oz. If you're walking a spread into a field rather than dropping it from a truck, that weight and bulk difference is the whole decision.
Realism and visibility
A silhouette shows a full, printed profile from the front or back but goes nearly invisible edge-on, which is why we score it lower on realism than a full body even with flocked heads and tails like Dakota's. Final Approach's fully flocked full bodies are built for exactly the situation a silhouette struggles with: geese circling low over a small field and studying the spread from every angle before committing. The tradeoff is body size: Final Approach's pack is sized as lesser Canadas, not full-size honkers, so check that against decoys you already run before adding a dozen.
Rigging and setup
Both silhouette packs ship with their own stakes: Dakota's 21-inch stake has a grab handle sized for gloved hands, and GHG's double-pronged steel Quick-Set stake is built to hold in ground too hard for a single spike. Final Approach includes 17-inch fiber stakes and its Zero Gravity motion system with every pack, so its full bodies move in wind the way a static silhouette can't. Higdon's half-shell page doesn't mention stakes or a base of any kind, so budget for your own if you pick it.

Neither side settles a spring snow goose spread, which uses dedicated snow and blue goose socks and shells; see spring snow goose gear. How we picked
Scored on paper, and we say so
Most gear sites say they tested everything. We didn't test these, and we say so. Every pick is scored from the maker's published specs, manuals and warranty terms on a rubric we publish, and the sources are listed at the bottom of the page.
Scores are editorial judgments from that published information, not field or lab results. Nobody pays for placement, and an unpublished spec is never guessed upward. See every rubric and weight.

We don't field-test decoys, calls, waders or blinds, and we don't pretend to. Specs, materials and warranty terms come from the maker's own pages and manuals (or a named retailer's listing where the maker doesn't publish them). Regulations are linked to the agency that writes them. Prices are set by Amazon and change often, so we don't print them. Where a figure isn't published, we say so. Read the full method.
