How to pick a small gift for a duck hunter

The safest small gift for a waterfowler is something they use up or lose. A hunter who has been at it for five years already owns calls they like, waders that fit and decoys they chose for their water, and anything you buy in those categories risks being the wrong brand, size or style. What nobody has enough of is warmers, hide material, dog bumpers and the small bits that live in a blind bag and go missing.

Buy consumables or buy small hardware with a published warranty. Everything on this page falls into one of those two buckets. Warmers get burned and thrown away; game straps, hide string, bumpers and whistles are cheap hardware that gets lost, chewed or left in a field. Both are safe because getting them slightly wrong costs nothing.

Avoid anything sized to a body. Gloves, socks, base layers, hats and boots all sound like good small gifts and all have a fit problem. If you want to go that direction, see best waterfowl hunting gloves and best socks for duck hunting, but check a size first.

Avoid anything with a personal preference baked into it. A duck call is the classic mistake: reed count, barrel material and volume are all matters of taste and skill level, and a hunter who blows a single reed will not thank you for a double. The call category is at best duck calls if you know their preference, and best duck calls for beginners if they are new.

If they hunt with a dog, buy for the dog. This is the single highest-hit-rate category in small gifts, because dog gear wears out on a schedule and handlers notice. A bumper gets destroyed, a whistle gets lost, and both are cheap. The full category is at best retriever training gear, and the bigger gift list for dog owners is at gifts for duck hunters with dogs.

What to buy in what order

Our ranking above follows the published spec scores, which is the right way to compare a refillable warmer against a game strap but not necessarily the order you should shop in. If you are filling one stocking, buy in this order instead:

  1. A pack of disposable hand warmers, every time. Ten pairs, up to 10 hours each at a published 135-degree average. No hunter has ever had too many, and they get used on the first cold morning. This is the one item on the page that is correct for literally every waterfowler.
  2. Toe warmers if they hunt in waders. Cold feet in waders is the most common complaint in the sport and the adhesive backing keeps the warmer under the toes rather than sliding under the arch. See how to stay warm duck hunting.
  3. The Zippo refillable warmer if you want one real gift rather than a consumable. It is the best-specified item here: metal, flameless, up to 12 hours per fill, a replaceable burner and a two-year warranty, and it comes with the warming bag and filling cup so there is nothing else to buy. It is also the item they will still own in five years.
  4. Dog gear if there is a dog. The HexaBumper for daily marking drills, the ACME Alpha whistle for sit and recall. Either one is a safe buy for a handler who trains at all.
  5. The game strap or the hide string if they hunt fields. The Big Limit strap is the classic gift nobody buys for themselves; Ghillie String is for a hunter with a layout blind that needs more material, and it pairs with how to hide a layout blind and best duck blind grass.

What not to buy

Novelty camo anything. If it would not survive a season in a wet blind bag, it is not a gift for a hunter, it is decoration.

Ammunition. Beyond the practical problems with shipping and gifting it, shot size and shell length are matched to the gun, the bird and the state's non-toxic rules, and getting it wrong makes the box useless. If you want to understand why, see what size shot for ducks and geese.

A single decoy. Decoys are bought by the six or the dozen to match a spread, and one orphan decoy in a different brand and posture does not help anybody. See best duck decoys if you want to go bigger.

Electronics without knowing their system. A spare battery, a remote or a charger is only a gift if it matches gear they already own. The motion-decoy category in particular is full of proprietary batteries — see best motion decoys.

If your budget is larger than a stocking, the bigger list is at gifts for duck hunters who already have everything, and the whole first-season shopping list is at duck hunting gear list.

How we scored these

The warmers, the game strap and the hide string are scored on this site's field-accessories rubric — function and features (30%), build and materials (25%), weather resistance (20%), size and portability (10%) and warranty (15%). The bumper and the whistle are scored on the retriever rubric: fit and adjustability (25%), protection spec (25%), safety features (20%), durability (15%) and warranty (15%). Full weightings are on how we score. The Zippo leads because it publishes a runtime, a weight, a replaceable part and a two-year warranty, which is more than anything else on this page. The disposable warmers rank low on build and warranty by definition — they are consumables, and that is also exactly why they are the best-value gift here. These are evaluations of published specifications, not of gear we used in a blind.

If you are buying one thing, buy the ten-pack of hand warmers and add the Zippo if you want the gift to last. If they hunt with a dog, add the bumper. If they hunt fields, add the game strap. That is a complete stocking for a waterfowler and none of it depends on knowing their size, their brand loyalty or how they like to call. Every buy button here goes to that product's own Amazon listing with the current price on the button, and several of these are sold in multiple pack sizes, colors and lengths — the bumper in 2-inch and 3-inch, the hide string in three colors, the whistle in fifteen — so pick the variant on the page you land on. For the next size up in gift budget, see gifts for duck hunters who already have everything and the blind bag checklist, which is effectively a list of everything a hunter is missing.

FAQ

Questions hunters ask

What is a good cheap gift for a duck hunter?
A ten-pack of disposable hand warmers. HotHands publishes up to 10 hours of heat per pair at a 135-degree average temperature, they are air-activated so there is nothing to charge, and no hunter has ever had too many. It is the one gift on this page that is correct for every waterfowler regardless of where or how they hunt.
What should you not buy a duck hunter?
Anything sized to their body, anything matched to their gun, and anything that reflects a personal preference. That rules out gloves, boots, waders and base layers (fit), ammunition (gauge, shell length, shot size and state non-toxic rules) and duck calls (reed count and volume are matters of taste and skill). Consumables and small hardware are the safe categories.
Are refillable hand warmers better than disposable ones?
Better value over several seasons, and better if you want the gift to last. Zippo publishes up to 12 hours per fill on its refillable warmer, with a replaceable burner, metal construction and a two-year warranty, and it ships with the warming bag and filling cup. Disposables win on convenience and on the number of hunts per dollar for someone who only sees a few genuinely cold mornings.
What is the best small gift for a hunter with a retriever?
A bumper or a whistle. Avery's ASD HexaBumper is a leak-proof valveless design with six flat sides and a 10-inch floating throw rope, built for daily marking drills, and the ACME Alpha 211.5 is a pealess three-inch whistle with patented sound chambers for sit and recall work. Both are cheap, both wear out or get lost, and handlers notice.
Can you buy a duck call as a gift?
Only if you know what they blow. Reed count is the problem: a double reed is forgiving and a single reed is loud and demanding, and a hunter who runs one will not use the other. If they are brand new to the sport, a beginner double reed is a safe bet; if they have been at it a while, buy a lanyard instead and let them pick the call.
